The key to the future is finally unearthed in the first full-length trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049… though the trailer spends more time on that future, set thirty years after Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, with its ruins and holograms, than on what that key is. It’s probably related to Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner with the LAPD tasked with bringing in his predecessor, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford). It’s probably also related to the haves-versus-have-nots themes of human and replicant, as a voice intones, “The world is built on a wall that separates kind. Tell either side there’s no wall, you bought a war.”
The new trailer also lets us see more of the cast, including Jared Leto creepily welcoming replicants into the world (“happy birthday”) and Black Mirror’s Mackenzie Davis, whose character we know nothing about. You can make your own guesses after watching the trailer:
The synopsis, from Warner Bros:
Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. K’s discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard, a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
Blade Runner 2049 comes to theaters October 6, 2017.
